Entrepreneur and stockbrokerWilliam ONeilfounded the newspaper in 1984 due to frustration with the lack of data about stocks in newspapers.2In 1991, the publications name was changed fromInvestors DailytoInvestors Business Daily.5In 1994, ten years after its founding,IBDwas ranked among the fastest-growing newspapers in the country.6

In 2005, the political cartoonistMichael RamirezjoinedIBD. In 2008, Ramirez won his second Pulitzer for editorial cartooning while at the company.7

In 2015, theIBDwebsite was accessed by over 4 million monthly visitors.2In 2016, it was announced that the company would change its printing schedule to once a week, but continue to publish new content to its website daily.1In May 2016, the first issue ofIBD Weeklywas published while the media outlet continued to publish new digital content daily.4

During the2016 presidential election in the U.S.,IBDwas one of two polls that correctly predicted aDonald Trumpvictory. Leading up to the election,IBDspoll had been dismissed as being an outlying survey,8but it was rated as one of the closest to the final result.9

IBDtakes a conservative political stance in its news and analysis.101112IBDprovides investor education through its Investors Corner, the Big Picture, and online resources. It covers internet and technology stocks in particular, and has a substantial editorial and opinion section. Every Monday in its weekly edition,IBDpublishes a list of 50 stocks that are most attractive based on earnings, stock price performance, and other criteria used in the CAN SLIM strategy.14

The IBD 50 Indexis the flagship US stock market benchmark published by the Investors Business Daily, similar to howFTSE 100was to theFinancial Times.1516The index is based on the CAN SLIM methodology invented by the newspapers founder William ONeil, and the list of its constituents is published every Monday.17Later it becomes the basis for anexchange-traded fund(ETF) called theInnovator IBD 50 ETF(Ticker: FFTY), which is also rebalanced weekly.18

In July 2009, an editorial inInvestors Business Dailyclaimed that physicistStephen Hawkingwouldnt have a chance in the U.K., where the [British]National Health Service(NHS) would say the life of this brilliant man, because of his physical handicaps, is essentially worthless.19Hawking was British, lived in theUnited Kingdomnearly all of his life, and received his medical care from the NHS.IBDlater removed the editorials reference to Hawking in its online version and appended an Editors Note which said, This version corrects the original editorial which implied that physicist Stephen Hawking, a professor at the University of Cambridge, did not live in the UK.2021Hawking himself responded, I wouldnt be here today if it were not for the NHS. I have received a large amount of high-quality treatment without which I would not have survived.22
